Active Eye?

No longer needed

Last week Pakcik had a new group of Form 1 at Almanar. They are from the centre of less privileged children I have made reference to before. In general, children from this home are difficult to handle. This has been a real challenge for me.

As I was moving around, allowing time for the children to copy what was on the white board, one girl whispered if I could write more clearly as she found difficulty to read my writing and had to resort to copying from one friend besides her. This not being the first time, I knew we were facing another of the normal eyesight problems quite easily resolved several times in the past. So, at the end of the class I was happily driving THREE of them to the normal optometrist, expecting, with a bit of luck, to see them with glasses a couple of days later. This time we had a problem with one of the girls. The optometrist could not determine the power of a lens suitable for her. She suffers from ‘active eye’ problem possibly something to do with her optical nerves, resulting in unsettled focusing power. An eye specialist’s help is needed in this case.

Perhaps, someone would care to enlighten Pakcik what this ‘active eye’ problem is.

P/s:

Pakcik used to wear glasses for many, many years. At one stage I needed one for reading as well.  Strange enough my problem has gradually improved during the last few years such that  I need no glasses for reading or driving on long distance journey from KT to KL and back. Probably, HE has returned me my eyesight after years of writing on the white board and glaring at misbehaving children and scolding them! About half a dozen glasses of different power and models lie around in my drawers – on stand-by or for sale! Or do I have the 'active eye' of different kind ?

Dear Pakchik, those kids are very privileged to have you to look out for their interests. I just hope they realise that.
So you are now specs-free, aren't you? I always marvel at the sight of 'pakchiks' who read without glasses. Such is ALLAH's bounty. Alhamdulillah.

Opah Mummy,

Now I am beginning to wonder if going beyond certain age we get back our eyesight. Your mum and Pakcik belongs to the same generation.

By the way, the comment box of your blog does not accept my comments. Unfortunately your email address is not on your profile page for me to tell you of the problem.

Nali,

Thank you.
When are you going to sort out your blog that has gone pooooof? I have no skill to advise you. That business friend in KL Central can probably lend you a hand, if he is not too busy.

Che Mid,

I thought only elderly persons regain eyesight. In your case it has to do with food and those vitamin pills etc, or a lot of greenary in your surroundings as suggested by some.

Barangkali ini jawapannya -

"Accommodative Dysfunction is an eye-focusing problem unrelated to aging changes in the lens of the eye. The lens in each eye is unable to "accommodate" or change focus sufficiently to provide clear vision at all distances. This can occur in children as well as adults. In most cases, it is not that a child lacks sufficient focusing power, but rather he or she can't maintain and use his or her eyes’ focusing ability effectively. Eye focusing problems often occur after continued viewing of near objects like a book or computer screen. Children with accommodative dysfunction may experience symptoms like eye-strain, temporarily blurred vision and/or headaches."

As Salam Pakcik. This is my first comment in your blog. Please allow my comment to pass through your jurisdiction. Hehehehhe.

When the optometrist can't verify the solution, definitely an eye specialist is in need. They will do further investigation with so many procedures, but definitely accurate. My father has just completed his eye operation to remove cataract and change his eye lens. The procedures were convincingly done by the specialist.

Dear Pakcik,
Googling got me 'lazy eyes'. But for 'active eyes' it did not come any where near. In fact a lot of technicalities made the search futile.

Awang Goneng,

I think that 'Accommodative Dysfunction' sounds technical enough to take a lay-man's term 'active eye'.

Thank you, Mi, for doing the research. Your appearance is timely as I am about to copy-paaste a few sentences from your last Sunday's column for Abang Ngah's nest posting.

Aziela,

Welcome. Unlike the frequency of your new postings I can only manage once a week at the most.

That change of lens sounds scary to me and I hope the child would not have to go through that.

Hank,

Thank you for trying. I tthink Awang Goneng's remarks seem as close as I can think of. I suggest a haiko on 'Mata Liar' for your posting - 'liar' having a wide range of meanings.

naliahmad has left a new comment on your post "Active Eye?":

Dear Pakchik,
He, lends me a hand? He needs both of his plus some more to handle the new umrah package he has come up with... he is that busy. So i guess I am on my own on this one.
