Tokens Of Appreciation ( Pt 2 )

Before this holy month of Ramadhan leaves us, Pak Cik should say a few words of thanks to many who have paid compliments in various forms, encouraging words, gestures and personal gifts, to Pak Cik and Mak Cik. For Almanar we have received, voluntarily and unsought for, cash, books and other materials. A local company has for the first time offered each ‘anak yatim’ associated with Almanar a sum of RM100/= as a Hari Raya gift.

As Pak Cik once wrote
Tokens Of Appreciation in January 08 of the simple gestures shown by parents. Likewise the two of us, Pak Cik and Mak Cik continue to receive these small gifts,

a small paper bag of duku (in season, costing about two ringgits)

some rambutan ( dari pokok sendiri),

a bunch of bananas,

cempedak (from kebun Tok Ki!),

a packet of keropok, and packets of kurma.

The real value is in the desire to express a deep-seated feeling, no matter what the monitory value of the gift is. They are invaluable tokens of appreciation, humbly and sincerely presented, for which words are never adequate for us to express our thanks.

A real surprise was when a girl handed Pak Cik a neat bag made of cloth, containing two boxes of good quality dates.

“ Pak Cik, ini buah tangan daripada Pengetua sekolah saya.” This came from a new principal of a fairly new secondary school which in the last three PMR examinations did not have a single pupil achieving 8As, mainly for weakness in English and Mathematics. Two months ago Pak Cik offered help for the first group of fifteen Form One pupils to be tutored at Almanar. Apparently the principal is very pleased with the initial feedback. Pak Cik do not promise grade A but I promise to give the children as good a foundation as possible in these subjects.

To all the well wishers please accept Pak Cik’s many thanks. To the Muslim readers Selamat Berpuasa dan Selamat Berhari Raya.

Berkhidmat kerana Tuhan untuk kemanusiaan.

Friend, at this leg of our journey of life what better things then to give and ask for nothing in return. We all have had a great life and continue to do so every minutes of living, so this is the time of giving. A great way to spend our golden age. In this beautiful world of ours "what we sow so shall we reap".

Have a nice day and take care.

Salam PakCik,

What you said is true. Small token with big heart is a great gift.

I learn that, to give is not because you have more, but because it is your responsibility. So, it doesn't matter if you could only give RM1 in the name of sedeqah, more importantly, you did what you could do in your circle of influence...

What you wish to achieve is “keupayaan menyumbang semula kepada orang” and ours at Almanar is “berkhidmat kerana Tuhan untuk kemanusiaan” – two routes towards a common objective. Let us hope and pray that in our own ways we can get some satisfaction, nothing more than just that.

Selamat Hari Raya kepada Amir. Jangan lupa sampaikan salam kepada mak dan ayah. Our prayer is that you will succeed and be a useful member of your family. Pak cik will never forget the three years when your father faithfully shuttled you to Almanar and back on his old motorbike come rain or shine.Surely he deserves something in return, Amir.

Abang Ngah,

I have to come back as your reflection gave me that strange old sayu feeling.

Yes, I remember the malja' of the old masjid well. I used to go there after afternoon prayer to hear the conversation of our elders, and, believe it or not, I was then in primary school but was conscripted by the Imam Pokku Tuan Padang to be his English tutor. He was trying to grasp the rudiments of the language and I remember he had a little picture book. God knows what I taught him!

The malja' also gave a view of your family house behind the masjid. That house meant a lot to me as it played a big part in my growing up years, but sadly, it is gone now, trodden by the juggernaut of development. I should mention too that the massive door of the house is in the back cover of GUiT, with me and my siblings in front of it, on Hari Raya!

Kampung Raja too means a lot to me, and of course you mentioned Sekolah Sultan Zainal Abidin. It gives us great pride to know that the foundation of SSZA was laid (though not literally) by our Tok Wan. I blogged about it here:
http://kecek-kecek.blogspot.com/2008/02/land-of-our-grandfather.html

Once again, Selamat Hari raya to you and Kak Mah and all your children. Maaf zahir bathin.

Mi, 17 Kg Masjid was the address I grew up at, thinking it would be there forever. When I returned in 1961, it was gone. The saddest of all was the lost of my early treasures, books and diaries. I had in fact read about Tok Wan Ahmad Hakim and SSZA and seen your photo.
Salaam from Abang Ngah

Babah,
Here is a comment from Mimi (my old SMS schoolmate):
"Ainun, can u enlighten me on what Almanar is pls.
Been reading yr dad's posts & m touched by them.. - Mimi "

My response to her :
"Mimi, Almanar is sort of a "tuition centre" that my Dad manages. It is housed in two small buildings in front of our house in KT. He takes in, for free, form1 pupils from nearby schools for a three-year course in Maths & Eng. A number of them are poor children but have potentials. He also teaches small groups of Std 6, form 4 and form5 pupils.Do visit him whenever you're in KT."

Here is another comment from a friend, Rozai, whose hubby is also a friend of Nuar :

"k nun, alhamdulillah... do u know that i hv bn admiring ur parents for this when we first visited ur parents at d kt's hse.. that was more than ten yrs ago!n hv bn dreaming to be like them, one day, insyaallah. salam to both ya - Rozai"
